Our Cat Enters Heaven | Margaret Atwood
Short and humorous. The story starts 2 minutes into the video. Good for a chuckle. Enjoy!

Poly Hemingway
Hi! My name is Poly Hemingway and just to be sure there’s no confusion, it’s pronounced P-O-L-L-Y. I’m quite special. I have an extra digit on each of my paws. Having opposable thumbs means I have the ability to get into or open things I would not normally be able to with regular feline paws.
My start in life was a little rough. I was abandoned on the side of the road with my siblings in Terrace, BC and was fortunate enough to be sent down to Vancouver where I was surrendered to the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association. Sadly, some of my family members weren’t so lucky. When VOKRA took me in, they discovered I was polydactyl and fittingly named me Hemingway! Apparently, Ernest Hemingway LOVED polydactyl kitties like me! They also discovered that even though I’m just a kitten, I’d already had babies.
A couple of weeks ago, VOKRA brought me to North Vancouver’s Pet Smart. I was just about to be moved to a new location, when two nice people looking for a kitty came to visit. I meowed at them and they played with me. I let them know just how much I liked them, and even though they had visits planned with some of my other VOKRA feline friends, they decided they liked me too much, and told the VOKRA lady to cancel their appointments - they wanted to take me home!
The drive home was really scary. I cried and I howled almost all the way there. The nice people tried to comfort me but I didn’t know where I was or where I was going . I continued to cry. When we finally made it to the apartment and I had a moment to get settled, I felt much better.
Little did I know that while I was busy exploring, the nice couple, my mommy and daddy, were putting out my favourite food, litter, toys and great posts to scratch on. I knew everything was going to be just fine and got comfortable really fast. With all the excitement, you might think I would have needed a big rest, but instead I played ALL night! I think I only let mommy and daddy sleep one hour - they were really tired this morning but that didn’t stop them from giving me plenty of hugs and kisses. Hee hee.
My new parents gave me an additional name. Poly! It’s a little easier to say, and like Hemingway, fitting because of my extra fingers and toes. I’m doing really well and I’m very happy. It’s only been 24 hours but I know my mommy and daddy love me very much. They told me I won’t have to be living life on the edge anymore and perhaps if the one-cat policy rule in our building ever changes, I may eventually have a brother or sister!

Eye See You!
Someone dear surprised me with a gift of these beautiful Pentax 10x3.6 binoculars to further encourage my recent love of birdwatching. With such amazing clarity and magnification, my feathered friends seem as if they are easily within reach. I mean wow! Could anything be more delightful than a close-up view of woodpeckers at their best high among the Douglas Firs? Oystercatchers happily picking away at molluscs on rocks? Eagles and ospreys in flight? Okay, I suppose there are some things more delightful, but as anyone can plainly see, I am enjoying my new gift immensely!
These engravings were made in 1818 by JF Naumann. JF was a second generation ornithologist, and his son followed in his footsteps by completing a 12 volume illustrated natural history of German birds. Found here.

Death in a Window Box
Aka “Flower Fatalities”
Two crows taking turns
On my pansies in the rain
Off! Dirty Birdies.

Disclaimer: I am aware the above images show only one crow, and that the window boxes are filled with petunias in the sun, not pansies in the rain. But it did happen and one day I’ll get a proper photo of the little vandals!
